At a distance of 17 km from the city of Lamia, the world-famous area of Thermopylae is located on the southeastern side of mount Kallidromon. The historical place has always been an area of military operations. Archaeological research in the area has uncovered the historical field where the battle of Thermopylae (480 BCE) took place. The thermal springs of Thermopylae, dedicated to Hercules, are also found there.
Important sites of the area are the battlefield, the thermal springs, the Centre for Historical Information of Thermopylae, the Monument of Leonidas, Kolonos Hill, and the Phocian Wall.
